Funding For Women's Healthcare Is Under Attack Across America
We all know and appreciate Planned Parenthood, especially as mothers. Planned Parenthood was founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have access to the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams without ceilings or limits. At mommy complex, we’re proud to stand with, and support Planned Parenthood as they come under yet another attack.
For years, backwards politicians across congress and statehouses throughout North America have senselessly attacked Planned Parenthood’s patients from accessing the crucial healthcare they need.
These attacks are completely without any logical or compassionate motivation, as Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide high-quality, affordable reproductive health care, including abortion, to 2.4 million women across the country.
Luckily for those 2.4 million women, Planned Parenthood isn’t backing down from yet another ‘defunding’ attack.
When politicians and people in power refer to ‘defunding’ Planned Parenthood, they really mean blocking vulnerable patients who depend on public health care funds from getting their care at Planned Parenthood health centers.
Planned Parenthood Provides More Than Abortions To Women In Need
Many of these patients are people on low-income who don’t have - or can’t afford - health insurance, or who rely on public funding like Medicaid. People on this type of assistance can’t use federal funding for abortion because of an unfair federal policy called ‘The Hyde Amendment,’ so attempts to block these patients at Planned Parenthood only keeps them from receiving essential preventative services, like birth control and lifesaving cancer and STD screenings.
Imagine: you, your mother, your sisters, your aunts, or your daughters, in a vulnerable position and unable to access the healthcare they need. Most of us can empathize with this, however, it seems like the people in power across the country fail to have the very human trait of compassion.
Unfortunately, this is just another installment in the defunding attacks against planned parenthood, which started in 2007, when Mike Pence introduced the first federal legislation to defund Planned Parenthood. Women’s health champions fought back then, but we need to fight back now too, against the crumbling old men trying to legislate against the care women can receive.
